Case management and tracking is the bedrock upon which all self-sufficiency activities rest. Each HOPE VI grantee is implementing a case management system that will track all original HOPE VI residents regardless of whether they are returning to the original site.

Developing safe and livable communities are key to providing public and Indian housing residents with an enjoyable place to live and one that improves their quality of life. In order to create such an environment, residents, public housing staff and administrators, law enforcement, businesses, and community service agencies must work together as partners. Collaborating to prevent and reduce crime and drug activity, promote safety, security, and well-being, motivate residents and staff to become involved in their community, and encourage residents to take ownership and control of their living areas has proven to be very effective. This presentation will also feature overviews of successful HUD-sponsored programs such as: Public Housing Drug Elimination Program Technical Assistance Program (PHDEP TA Program); Operation SAFE Home; Community Policing; Resident Patrols; the Officer/Teacher Next Door Program; and the Youth Safe Haven/Police Mini-Station Program.

Approaches to Mortgage Default Counseling

The presenter will demonstrate an automated system for delivering housing counseling, tracking participants, and reporting results, Existing agencies agree to provide a uniform housing counseling program in accordance with pre-determined methods and standards. The system streamlines reporting because information is shared between critical agencies via the internet.
 
Using the Fair Housing Dispute Resolution Process

There will also be a discussion about how the Federal government investigates and resolves environmental justice concerns.

Using Vouchers for Homeownership

The homeownership option is a new special housing type under the housing choice voucher program. This new initiative will permit public housing agencies administering the housing choice voucher program to use voucher subsidies normally provided for rental assistance to assist eligible first-time homeowners with their monthly homeownership expenses.
 

 

Investing in the Future of Public Housing Children

Othello Poullard, Project Director, Public Housing Graduates Program, Washington, DC
    It has long been understood that persons who live in low income communities frequently do not have the same opportunities for success, as compared to persons in higher economic classes. Recent statistics however indicate that when direct and focused intervention is channeled into these communities, the probability of success increases dramatically. The key is in sustained intervention as well as emphasis on exposure, opportunity and self-esteem, focusing first on basic needs and eventually leading to higher individual needs. Young people need to loved, appreciated and motivated. It is from these concepts that the hopes of success are ultimately realized among youth in low income communities.

This workshop provides an opportunity for participants to discuss the advantages and disadvantages persons with disabilities living in mainstream housing and the advantages and disadvantages of persons with disabilities living in programmatic-based housing.

Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc., a central Iowa-based non-profit, has acquired a 35 foot Winnebago recreational vehicle and converted it into a mobile field office for use as a local point of contact and outreach in rural communities across southern Iowa. It is used to reach out to underserved and immigrant populations and inform and educate them on homeownership opportunities, housing assistance resources, and on Fair Housing.
