June is Homeownership Month in Sioux Falls

Mayor Dave Munson recently signed a proclamation declaring June as Homeownership Month in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mayor Munson believes homeownership stabilizes communities and families, makes workers more reliable with less employee turnover and provides children a great start in school.

Sioux Empire Housing Partnership (SEHP) and Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS), HUD-approved housing counseling agencies located in Sioux Falls, were present along with HUD to support the Mayor in his proclamation. Housing counseling agencies provide both one-on-one counseling and classes to help potential homebuyers learn more about the home buying process.

To help low-income families become homeowners, the City of Sioux Falls provides down payment assistance through its HOME funds. The City also works with Sioux Falls Housing and Redevelopment Commission to build new homes in the Whittier neighborhood, following demolition of dilapidated units. Once constructed, these new homes are sold at a discounted price to income-qualified families.

SEHP, in addition to housing counseling, works with the local lending community to build and sell affordable houses. Homes for under $120,000 are available in their latest work, the Valley Green subdivision in the northwest corner of the city.

CCCS provides financial and housing counseling classes in Sioux Falls, and throughout the eastern part of South Dakota.
