Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 Grants

PROJECT SUMMARY: IDAHO

(see also Oregon for shared grant)

Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. in Boise, ID, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $200,000. In 1998, Boise's Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. (BNHS) was awarded certification and funding as a CDFI by the US Treasury Department, making BNHS Idaho's only CDFI. The majority of the $1,815,000 in CDFI funds will be used as low interest second mortgage loan products to create new low-income homeowners statewide, focusing on underserved rural areas. The HUD seed support grant will provide BNHS with the capacity to significantly increase penetration of the CDFI loan program into Idaho's rural communities. Specifically, funds will be used to increase staff and outreach capacity. This increased capacity will allow BNHS to create at least 40 new homeowners living in rural communities, a state-wide network of rural community leaders, and to strengthen the corporation's financial base. BNHS partners in this effort are their CDFI partners, Idaho's USDA Rural Housing Service Division, Idaho Housing and Finance Agency, Idaho's HUD Community Builders, and low-income residents from each of Idaho's six regions.
