HUD to Announce $180 Million Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grants

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia L. Fudge, along with HUD Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman, and other HUD principals will travel to awardee cities to present Choice Neighborhoods Implementation (CNI) Grants totaling $180 million.

On Thursday, Secretary Fudge will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to present a $50 million grant to the Tulsa Housing Authority and the City of Tulsa.

"We continue to see the transformative work that the Choice Neighborhoods program achieves," said Secretary Fudge. "Thursday's announcement in Tulsa, and the other announcements that will take place this week, serve as an example to communities across the United States that realizing the vison of mixed-income housing is attainable. It will take innovation to advance the cause, but these Choice Neighborhoods projects, which bring 2,323 new mixed-income units, represent the kind of innovative thinking and collaboration needed to tackle our housing crisis."

The Choice Neighborhoods Program encourages local partners to invest additional funding and services that are vital to the program's success. Each CNI applicant must find these additional resources in order to leverage the funds necessary to complete the project. Based on information provided in each community's application, the four awardees will collectively leverage an additional $2.5 billion in public and private resources to further invest in their local communities.

Also on Thursday, Deputy Secretary Todman will make a Choice Neighborhoods project site visit to Omaha, Nebraska, where she will present a $50 million award to the city and the Omaha Housing Authority.

The core goals of the Choice Neighborhoods program include replacing distressed HUD-assisted housing with high-quality, mixed-income housing that responds to the needs of the surrounding neighborhood. The program also strives to improve income, health, and educational outcomes for those in the target area, while attracting reinvestment to distressed neighborhoods to further offer amenities and assets important to families' choices about their community.

Continuing the grantee visits, HUD Region 4 Administrator Jose Alvarez will make a trip to Knoxville, TN on Friday, September 23, where he will present a $40 million Choice Neighborhoods grant to the Knoxville Community Development Corporation and the City of Knoxville.

Finally, Durham, North Carolina will welcome HUD General Deputy Assistant Secretary Dominique Blom on Monday, September 26, to announce the $40 million that the Durham Housing Authority and City of Durham have been awarded.
