4: Listen to the Audience
Part of marketing is collecting feedback from your audience so you can
improve your product.
- One of the most important things you can learn is to listen to your
audience.
- Monitor the email. Are they asking the same questions over and
over?
- Monitor your statistics
- What's the most visited page? What's the least? Maybe you
need to move or improve the content to get your message out.
- Run a survey
- Put up a note on your front page that says, "help us make
our site better;" and ask a few questions
- Face-to-face feedback is best. Try a focus group.
- You can do a focus group in 1/2 an hour
- Anywhere you can find a handful of people--5 or 6--stop and ask
them if they can spare 15 minutes to give you feedback on your site
- Focus groups really kill two birds with one stone:
- First, they give you an opportunity to tell people about your
site
- Second, they can produce some great ideas.
- In your packet are some suggestions
for conducting focus groups
- Keep the group small
- Take notes--show that you care about what they say
- Assure them they won't hurt your feelings
