Keep Your Website Accessible!

As public service agencies, we need to make sure our websites are accessible to everyone. Follow these simple rules, and you won't go wrong.

  • Use dark fonts on white backgrounds -- people with vision problems depend on the contrast
  • Avoid watermarks/wallpaper
  • Avoid red and green text for navigation. People who are color blind may see these colors as shades of gray
  • Make sure graphics have text labels
  • Offer text alternatives for information that is conveyed in graphics
  • Avoid drop-down menus -- people with motor skill problems have trouble manipulating them
  • Don't use blink! Blinking graphics can cause seizures
  • Be thoughtful about the words you choose as links -- software that reads text will describe each link by the words you underscore

    • E.g., don't use:
Click Here for a list of homes in California
Click Here for a list of homes in Oregon
Click Here for a list of homes in Washington

    • Do use:
Click here for a list of homes in California
Click here for a list of homes in Oregon
Click here for a list of homes in Washington
